Speaking at Teck Ghee Chinese New Year dinner, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that using Singapore’s reserves to fund healthcare spending will deplete a “precious nest egg” that has been built up over a long period of time.
PM Lee says the Government has a duty to manage the reserves, invest them wisely, keep them safe and intact sot that they will be available when Singaporeans encounter a rainy day.
He added that an ageing society is NOT A RAINY DAY but a LONG-TERM TREND.
“The ageing society and healthcare is not a rainy day, it is an every-day-need-money day, a long-term trend. We are ageing, we will need to spend more on healthcare every year, year after year, for many years to come. If we use the reserves for something we need money for every day, we will find there will be no more money when we need it,” said Mr Lee.
