Deliberate Online Falsehoods can cause real harm

Some people think that the Select Committee hearing is government propaganda and wayang.

Some think it is just an attempt to clamp down on their free speech.

These people have yet to woken up to the reality of deliberate online falsehoods and the harm it can cause.

If you think it is just an attempt to clamp down on your free speech, remove yourself from the centre and place Singapore there in her rightful place.

Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged Facebook's role in fuelling the anti-Rohingya propaganda in Myanmar.

"The Myanmar issues have, I think, gotten a lot of focus inside the company," he told Vox.

"I remember, one Saturday morning, I got a phone call and we detected that people were trying to spread sensational messages through — it was Facebook Messenger in this case — to each side of the conflict, basically telling the Muslims, 'Hey, there’s about to be an uprising of the Buddhists, so make sure that you are armed and go to this place.' And then the same thing on the other side," he said.

"So that’s the kind of thing where I think it is clear that people were trying to use our tools in order to incite real harm."

Is there democracy if groups of people are fighting and killing each other because they believe in fake news?

Fake news is an assault on democracy and free speech.
